Danny Byrd – Rave Digger (Hospital Records)
For those of you unfamiliar with Danny Byrd he is what I would consider a drum and bass genius. His previous album, Supersized had some truly amazing songs such as Red Mist, a brooding, excited song with a distinguished melody and sublime vocal hook.
But that’s enough of his last album, I am currently immersed in his latest creation – Rave Digger.
The album opens with his celebrated release Ill Behaviour, sampling Renegade Master (Fatboy Slim & Wildchild) “Back once again with the ill behaviour” this catchy (in the typical Danny Byrd kind of a way) track builds so much hype we are literally accelerated into the album.
Rave Digger is an amazing blend of so many elements that build the genre; the old school ’90s rave is present in many of the tracks, particularly noted on Hot Fuzz (Feat Tomahawk). Tradition dance vocals and melody is another subtle factor added to the blend, a favourite of mine is the vocal “Together we stand, united we fall” on the track We Can Have it All which conjures all kinds of associations to some classic club tunes.
Another standout track is Tonight (Featuring Netsky) which demonstrates Danny Byrds power to build excitement and create a track that you can’t resist nodding your head to.
With two tracks that mimic news reports of illegal raves and the sentencing of “Mr. Daniel Byrd” this album is absolutely a voyage; from track 1 to track 13 we travel through amen breaks, mind boggling melodies, addictive vocal hooks and rises and falls that just make you want to dance your heart out.
If you haven’t already I can only urge you to go out and buy this album.
Byrd is the word.
